DESCRIPTION: Length between 12 and 19mm. The shiny lime green head, thorax and abdomen has a pale edged brown stripe running along its upper length and the ovipositor is long and straight and nearly as long as the body. The adult wings extend beyond the hind knee with nymphs having stunted wings. BEHAVIOUR: The song is a soft hissing buzz that can continue for quite a while but which is inaudible to many. Both sexes have good eyesight and quickly jump away or move around grass blades and other stems to avoid being seen. The food is primarily grasses but small insects can be taken. DISTRIBUTION: Found in good numbers in southern Britain and the south east. HABITAT: Meadows, marshes, reed-beds and riversides. PERIOD: July to October.
